No. This is the single biggest misconception about MTD and it causes real anxiety. Quarterly updates are information, not payment. Your payment dates do not change: 31 January and 31 July, exactly as they are under Self Assessment, including payments on account. You are sending HMRC a picture of your trading four times a year, but the bill still arrives on the same schedule it always did. HMRC may show you an estimated tax figure as updates come in, and some software displays a running estimate too — that is a forecast to help you budget, not a demand. If anything, most clients find the estimate useful, because the old model of discovering your January bill in the previous December was a poor way to plan cash flow.
